Dungeons and Dragons Responds to Rumors Regarding Homebrew Crackdown in One D&D

Wizards of the Coast responds to some recent rumors of Dungeons and Dragons removing support for homebrew content in One D&D.

Despite not providing any details regarding its plans, Dungeons and Dragons has responded to recent claims that Wizards of the Coast might discontinue support for third-party material in One D&D. Once One D&D is launched in 2024, Dungeons and Dragons appears to wish to continue supporting homebrew.

One D&D, an evergreen evolution of 5th Edition, was introduced earlier this year by Dungeons and Dragons to replace the previous edition system. However, YouTuber Indestructoboy revealed that a reliable source within Wizards of the Coast had informed Dungeons and Dragons that One D&D may not renew the Open Game License, effectively prohibiting the publication of third-party content for One D&D without explicit Wizards of the Coast permission.

ComicBook.com reached out to Wizards of the Coast seeking clarification on the future of the OGL and the accompanying System Reference Document. Wizards of the Coast responded to the rumors with the following statement:

"We will continue to support the thousands of creators making third-party D&D content with the release of One D&D in 2024. While it is certain our Open Game License (OGL) will continue to evolve, just as it has since its inception, we're too early in the development of One D&D to give more specifics on the OGL or System Reference Document (SRD) at this time."

Nevertheless, it at least seems like Wizards of the Coast isn’t going to completely kill homebrew in One D&D. While Dungeons and Dragons creators who make a living by selling third-party content may not be able to rest easy yet, they can at least have hope their ways of life won’t come crashing down. Until it is ready to share specifics on the fate of the OGL and SRD in One D&D, it is best to take both the rumor and the accompanying statement from Wizards of the Coast with a grain of salt.
